Lake Vostok Uncovered After 20 Million Years

Lake Vostok is the third largest lake by volume in the world. Russian scientists have spent the past 20 years boring through just over 2 miles of snow and ice to reach the lakes surface. This is the first time in an estimated 20 million years that the lake has seen the light of day. The first time anything in the lake has been seen by humans.
